Background:
In the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Haruhi is introduced immediately as someone with no interest in the normal: she introduces herself to the class and claims that she doesn't want to speak with just anyone in the class, and wanted those who could be aliens, time travelers, or espers to come forward immediately. Despite this, she gains an every day conversational partner in the guy who sits in front of her, 'Kyon'. Their conversations lead to Haruhi forming the SOS Brigade, and with it come Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina, and Itsuki Koizumi. Unbeknownst to her, the alien, time traveler, and esper that she was looking for. They gathered to observe Haruhi's abilities, as the potential for auto-evolution, as a time disruption anomaly, and, as Itsuki Koizumi puts it, a potential God.Personality:
The main series follows Kyon and the other three as they make an attempt to keep up with Haruhi's activities, in seeking out the mysterious while unwittingly creating mysteries herself. All of this sprouted from Tanabata three years prior, as Kyon and Mikuru Asahina traveled in time to help her write a message on her school's sports field. At the time, the younger Haruhi didn't get a good look at the tandem's face, and recognizing the uniform, made a concerted effort to enroll in North High.
Moving onto The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan! In it, much like in the alternate reality created in The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, she's a student at Kouyouen Academy, and lives in a world as normal as could be.
Haruhi Suzumiya's relevance begins in a flashback weeks prior to the series' starting. Much like on Tanabata in the other timeline, she enlists someone to help her write a message to Santa in the park. This time it's Yuki Nagato, the timid president of the North High Literature Club, worried about keeping the club alive with her as its sole member. When questioned about Santa's existence, she accidentally gives Yuki inspiring advice and unwittingly helps the girl drum up the will to move forward and keep the club alive, finding two students to join and two others to make up the numbers as paper members. It seemed as if it were just a chance meeting... until they crossed paths again, this time with Haruhi appearing and collapsing in front of Yuki and fellow Lit Club member Kyon, out all night waiting for Santa. After introducing herself and Yuki attempting to thank her for everything that she did, Haruhi immediately decided to become a fixture in their club, tracking down North High and more specifically, the club room.
From that moment on, Haruhi with "mysterious transfer student" Itsuki Koizumi in tow, became a "special member" of the club, a title which she officially gave herself. Immediately her influence on the club became great, and she started to inject the life that the club had been lacking prior. She began scheduling activities for the group, training trips out of town and Tanabata activities in the club room as the group entered their second year in High School. While she had missed the "Disappearance" episode, immediately after we find out why Tanabata even in this universe, is important to Haruhi.
Though he had completely forgotten, a few years prior, Haruhi (in junior high) had met Kyon (also in junior high) and he helped her write a message to aliens. Heading into junior high, Haruhi had already begun to give up on her sense of wonder, and she was gaining more and more common sense as time went on. Even though he wasn't keen on the idea of helping her, he went along with her silly idea and pulled her back towards thinking about the mysterious, saving her from her dread and helping her get back on track-- especially now that they were reunited in high school. She never brings it up to him directly, and though she held a flame for him throughout their time together, she stepped aside and let him go, seeing that both he and Yuki shared the same feelings for each other.
The club would continue on as Yuki and Kyon grew closer together, eventually starting to date. Haruhi was the second to find out about it, after Koizumi was approached by Kyon for advice. Despite her own feelings towards Kyon and everything else happening, she's given the two their blessing and sometime around Valentine's Day, their relationship became public knowledge. With that being the case, the Literature Club started their third year and while they continued hanging out as they had, two key decisions would be made: no one would inherit the Literature Club (as they didn't really do any club activities anyway) and Ryoko, after graduating, will study abroad and go to college in Canada. Haruhi was key in helping Ryoko make her decision, even though she didn't quite understand her motivations for it. As the series reached its conclusion, the Literature Club savored the time they spent together up to graduation and Ryoko's departure. The series' epilogue catches up with everyone two years later: Haruhi is now going to the same university as Tsuruya and Mikuru Asahina, meeting up with Ryoko as they go to visit Yuki and Kyon, now living together.
Despite not being the same person, there's a few traits of hers that she shares with the original Haruhi Suzumiya. From the get go, Haruhi showed who she was with her first interaction with Yuki. Having never met her before, she immediately called out and once she was close, began giving orders to a complete stranger. The way it was described was 'hunger': Haruhi Suzumiya's desire to seek out the mysterious and refuse to believe that something isn't there. To her, as long as the chance is greater than zero, she'll go to any means to find out what she can about anything: be it Santa, or aliens, or anything. Haruhi is a driven individual: as soon as she sets a goal, she won't be stopped even for a second and will drag anyone close to her into it.Abilities: None, outside of her athleticism.
Her dynamic curiosity keeps her going towards anything, and she's always willing to look at and try things out, at least once. This applies to other aspects as well: during the training trip at Tsuruya's summer home, a test of courage was proposed and Haruhi immediately decided on being the first one out. She's never shown to be afraid of anything, and rushes in regardless of any consequence. The trip also showed her competitive side, in that she wanted to be the first one to find something mysterious out there. That's just her as well: competitive in video games, card games, and yes, even in attendance... with a price. When she beats Yuki in a fighting game multiple times, she decides on a penalty game of having her go to the store-- and the same for her losing a card game. So even though she's not necessarily in charge, she's definitely still into the idea of penalties.
Haruhi's excitable nature is evident from the moment she spots the Literature Club in the window at North High, immediately rushing to find them. As that happened, she didn't care about being a student from a different school wandering the halls. It's safe to say, from that and how rumors about her have passed around, that she doesn't really care much about the opinion of others. They're just opinions after all, and who knows herself better than she does? There are times she'll get huffy when either Kyon or Ryoko are being mean to her, but when it comes to just about anyone else, she shrugs off any kind of criticism against her. In some cases, she even deflects it, or takes others' sarcasm and applies it to her own ego. Kyon at one point says in an exasperated tone that she's amazing-- and she completely agrees. She's as amazing as they come.
Despite how she acts most of the time, Haruhi's biggest asset in the Disappearance is her surprising reliability. Later on, Haruhi consistently listens to Ryoko Asakura's worries about Kyon and Yuki's relationship, and provides advice throughout the entire time. Even though she's not necessarily the most tactful person, she does support everyone in everything they're doing. Most of it is in telling Ryoko that she's overreacting, surprisingly becoming the tsukkomi to all of the class rep's ideas on how to watch over them. As the series goes on, Haruhi maintains more of a casual and laid back persona when she's in the club room, only letting that excited side of her show when she's ready to have fun. Comparing the two sides go from when she's calmly and happily explaining how she learned how to cook to Yuki to their final summer vacation, where she's gleefully leaping into a pool and not really caring about the rules.
It slightly extends to Yuki as well-- she doesn't give too much advice to her, but she does look after her like she would a little sister: giving her a little push now and again to do more, but letting her go at her own pace. When Yuki's sick with the flu, Haruhi's there to help her get better, and sticks around long enough after to help Ryoko come to terms with her dating. Even though she's potentially causing problems for them, she definitely cares for everyone in the club, and for the Calligraphy Club pair of Tsuruya and Mikuru. With Tsuruya's consistent support for Haruhi and all of her ideas, and consistently being a source of help, she built a rapport with just about everyone. Plus, she still thinks Mikuru has a cute factor that makes her irresistable, even to her.
In the end, Haruhi's the type to go get what she wants, but is conscientious enough to hold back when it's for the benefit of a friend. And truly, she really does want to enjoy everything she can, and live life to the fullest.
